[Marty hesitates before eventually breaking up the hug and responding to the question, deliberately avoiding any eye contact.]

Over a year now. It's... a long story.

[Of course they probably have plenty of time now that Doc's here, but he really didn't want to seem like he desperately missed Doc or anything.]

[Doc feels a massive twinge of irrational guilt. He lowers his head too, trying to peek.]

But it won't take anywhere near a year to tell it? Help me understand and we can fix this. For example...

[He turns to look at his wild tail and catches sight of something. His jaw drops comically.]

Why the hell is the flux capacitor tattooed on my ass? I can assure you I wasn't a regular at the tattoo parlors in Hill Valley.

[Marty manages a small chuckle at that. Ah, he missed Doc's eccentricity.]

Yeah, that's a cutie mark. Ponies get them here once they figured out their destiny, apparently.

...cutie mark?

[He makes a Doc face at that term. He doesn't like it.]

Well I suppose it's true. Time travel is my destiny. And dragons don't realize theirs in the same way?

...assuming, of course, that you are a dragon. It's what you most closely resemble, but I don't entirely resemble Earth horses either...something very peculiar is going on.

[Well at least Doc's finding this whole "cutesy pony-centric stuff" really weird too.]

I'm pretty sure that the cutie mark is just a thing for ponies. I am a dragon by the way; I can't really complain though since I at least have hands.

[He would honestly rather die than not be able to play music anymore.]

And I think you're supposed to be a unicorn so you can use magic here.

[Doc has to agree about the hands. How's he going to hold a wrench now?]

And I, Doctor Emmett Brown, lifelong man of science...

...am now a magical unicorn.

[Oh god. It can't be true. It's so ridiculous. He laughs.]

[While the laughing surprises him initially, Marty soon joins in on it. It was a really bizarre situation and heck he kind of needed a laugh anyway.]

You know, it's hard to believe that we would be doing anything that's half as weird as time traveling.

Yet here we are.

[Doc shares a smile with Marty for a good moment...strange new faces or not, they're still irrevocably the best of friends. He's glad for that. But then...there's a somber air here too.]

You said you've lived here a year? What's happened in that time?

[Are you all right, he doesn't say. Marty's initial reaction seemed to be about a little more than loneliness, and he can't help but worry.]

Well I'm living with this robot who's now a cat, and I managed to get an internship with the radio station here.

[He pauses before continuing.]

I, ah, also learned a couple things about the person who brought us here?

[More hesitation, both because he doesn't want Doc to realize how terrified he was a few months ago and because he doesn't really want to tell him that he told the entire country that he's a time traveler.]

[Yes, good to hear that Marty has a friend. But this other business...]

Tell me about them. The one responsible for this mess, I mean. So I can do what I can to help fix it.

[Excuse you, Marty has multiple friends here!]

Well she's apparently a corrupted version of one of the princesses here, and has apparently devoured entire worlds before. She ah, also kind of knows about me?

Let's see...evil princess, devours worlds...

[He narrows his eyes.]

What do you mean know about you?

[What's so different about Marty compared to the others here? Decent kid. Plays guitar. Is late for school sometimes...is he...?

Doc glances at his cutie mark. That...might be a very bad thing to be displaying.]

[He gives a soft sigh before saying anything else.]

So... she knows that I'm a time traveler. More than she could possibly know. Like she knows when I called myself "Darth Vader" that one time.

[A pause.]

It's really the fact that I don't know what she wants with me that freaks me out the most.

[Doc lets out a low hiss. Not good. Not good at all.]

...if that's the case, it's likely that she's hoping to use time travel to further her world-devouring goals. And if so, you'd be enough of an appetizing target to please her, all thanks to what you've learned with me. Doubtlessly she hoped to extract all kinds of tips and tricks.

But if it's time travel knowledge she's after, I'll bet I'm now her number one target.

[Damnit.]

It's not your fault, Doc. I mean there's no way you could have known about any of this.

[He offers a smile.]

But since we're both here I'm sure we can take her on if she tries to eat either of us.

I should have been here for you. I regret that I wasn't. But we'll show her that trapping us was a big mistake.

[He does his best to 'elbow' Marty. New limbs are still weird.]

So I'll need a lab. And some hoof-friendly tools. What I wouldn't give for thumbs! Treasure yours, Marty.

Hey, even if you did know I was here, there's no way you could just come here and rescue me.

[His grin does widen though.]

Well I don't know about a lab, but since you're a unicorn you don't have to worry about the tools being "hoof-friendly"; you can just pick them up with your mind.

Psychokinesis? Preposterous...isn't it? As if I really could bend things to my will with my mind...

[He mutters, gaze dropping to a twig lying on the ground. He scoffs at the idea, but tries to imagine picking it up anyway. He tries not to look too hopeful, but sure enough, the stick glows, rising in front of his eyes.]

Great Scott!

[Just to be sure, he tries it again. It works again. Wow. Don't mind him, Marty, he'll just be deliriously happy here.]

[C'mon Doc, you didn't trust Marty and his claims about magical pony princesses?]

Christ you're a natural at this, Doc!

If you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything.

Though I never expected that to apply to casting 'magic'.

[He grins, then jumps right into planning his immediate future.]

I'll need a job---I don't know how much value scientific services are to a magic-based pony land, but they could use a blacksmith, right? Then I'll have to set up camp...plenty of even plain. And then there's research!

[As he looks at Marty, he has a thought.]

Of course, I realize that you've had to build your own busy life here in my absence. I certainly understand if you don't have the time to be my assistant anymore---but with magic, I can have as many hands as I need! I'll be fine.

Don't worry Doc, I only really have my internship and I'm sure Cecil won't mind if I hang out with you.

[Plus someone has to make sure Doc doesn't accidentally hit someone with flying wrenches.]

Besides, we need to catch up. How long as it been since you've last seen me anyway?

[Doc sighs.]

It's been a few months back in 1885. Clara and I have a new home, and everything is just as I hoped.

There are only two things missing in my life: the first, modern technology. I've twisted and turned the inner workings of your hoverboard every which way, and I think there's a new invention brewing---but with 1885 parts, it'll take years.

[He smiles sadly.]

The second, of course, was you.

[Well, it sounds like that Doc probably hasn't gotten his children yet, so that's probably important information to remember so nothing slips out. (Even if Doc didn't give much of a damn about knowing his own future anymore, just thrusting the idea that he's going to have two children might be pretty surprising.)

Either way it was kind of comforting to know that Doc won't go years without seeing him again now. Because man it was hard to go just a year without seeing Doc.]

Don't worry Doc, I promise that we'll meet again some day at least.

[He says this as if it were a joke, but there was a sincere look in his eye that they would meet again at home.]

Aside from the present, you mean.

The future. Our future---assuming it hasn't been entirely altered by this little detour into whims of fantasy.

[He frowns for a beat, then another...and then he nods.]

But no matter where we go from here, I promise I'll return someday. After all this? No law of physics in this universe will stop me from finding you again.

[He briefly squeezes Marty's shoulders with a lanky leg.]

Now why don't we discuss this over breakfast? Forgive me if I make a bit of a mess this morning, the magic's still brand new.

[Darn, Marty forgot that there's a chance of this whole thing affecting the future.. er, past, in some way. Oh well, no point in worrying now when there's nothing they can do.]

I can help, I mean Arcee did help me learn how to cook.

[Marty all you know how to make is cake. That is not appropriate breakfast food.]
