Well I'm sure as long as you believe in yourself you guys will be able to fix it.

[As he writes this though, he suddenly looks very sad. That statement feels so hollow now that he completely failed those he's cared about.]

[Well, that's great. Very kind. Except...yeah, she can see that too.]

It's nothing. You hardly know me anyway and I wouldn't want to scare you off by just telling you my backstory.

[Applejack doesn't want to push---but something does start to make sense.]

Is this about you deserving to die? Because nopony does.

[He's not going to comment how she's wrong about the deserving to die (or the "Nopony" part). He didn't want to seem self pitying or anything. It's bad enough that he's technically evil now he doesn't want to become Doofenshmirtz.]

Most folks don't want to die, y'know. Whatever happened...you're hurting, I know.

[There is a long pause before Perry writes again.]

If I told you what happened, you would realize that I am a terrible person.

[She gives him a look of disbelief.]

You? Naw, I don't see it. You're no Nightmare Moon.

I killed a child.

[He instantly regrets "blurting that out" and is tempted to just shut the scroll and hide away somewhere.]

[Oh. She steps back, eyes wide with horror, but she forces herself to grab the quill again and write.]

Why?

[When he writes again the words suddenly become less neat. He was trying so hard not to just burst into tears right then for having to talk about his horrible crime.]

A friend went into a coma. I knew someone was going to die on Friday and I was terrified it would be him. I didn't mean to kill the child I was just trying to push him out of the way. I didn't register who was even at his bed until he hit the desk. I'm so sorry.

[He wasn't quite sure if he was apologizing to the stranger or himself.]

[Well, that's a lot of confusing mess, but one thing is clear. She looks at him again, sadness in her eyes---for him.]

It was an accident. That's different from a monster.

[He can't even look at his scroll as he's writing this.]

I promised to protect them though. I promised them that we would be able to find a way out if they trusted me, and I failed. I failed them by killing an innocent child.

And you meant to. I can tell just by looking, you meant every word.

I'm so sorry. Nopony should have to feel what you're feeling now.

It's fine, I only wish the best for the remained students I'll survive as long as no one does something as stupid as what I've done.

What I've learned here is that folks are more forgiving than you'd think. Even the ones who've done terrible things, outside their control---so long as they really mean to turn a new leaf, anypony can start over.

But when you're ready, you've gotta forgive yourself too.
